India Accelerates Flex-Fuel Vehicle Push as Automakers Prepare Major Launches in 2026

India’s automotive industry is entering a new phase of transformation as automakers gear up to launch a range of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) in 2026, offering consumers an alternative to conventional petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

After the rise of electric vehicles as the preferred solution for cleaner mobility, flex-fuel technology is emerging as another promising option. These vehicles are designed to run on varying blends of petrol and ethanol — including up to 100% ethanol — leveraging India’s vast agricultural resources and reducing dependence on imported crude oil.

The momentum behind FFVs has gained pace amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have contributed to higher global crude oil prices and renewed concerns over India’s energy security.

Although several automakers showcased flex-fuel prototypes at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, a significant policy move by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has accelerated their rollout. In April 2026, the ministry included E100, or pure ethanol, in automobile testing and certification standards, paving the way for commercial deployment of vehicles capable of operating entirely on ethanol.

According to Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Governance at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the updated regulations mark a major breakthrough for the industry.

“Earlier, any vehicle capable of using more than 85% ethanol could not be classified as a flex-fuel vehicle. With that restriction removed, the path is now open for E100-compatible vehicles,” Gulati said.

Industry leaders believe FFVs can complement India’s existing E20 fuel blending programme without requiring a significant increase in the national blending mandate.

Gulati pointed to Brazil as a successful model for large-scale adoption. Despite maintaining a base ethanol blend of E27, Brazil’s widespread use of FFVs has helped raise the country’s average ethanol consumption to nearly 50%.

Today, flex-fuel vehicles account for around 90% of new car sales in Brazil, the world’s second-largest ethanol producer after the United States.

“In Brazil, ethanol consumption surged after the introduction of FFVs as the necessary infrastructure and market conditions were established,” Gulati noted. “Consumers found a clear economic advantage in choosing ethanol over conventional fuels.”

Modern flex-fuel engines automatically detect the ethanol content in the fuel tank and adjust engine performance accordingly. Industry experts say advancements in technology have addressed earlier concerns related to engine corrosion and reduced fuel efficiency.

Supporters argue that the technology offers benefits across the value chain — from consumers and automakers to oil marketing companies, farmers, ethanol producers, and the government.

As India seeks to diversify its energy mix, reduce emissions, and strengthen energy independence, flex-fuel vehicles could emerge as a key pillar in the country’s future mobility strategy.
